How Does DPid Work?
The DPid process typically begins with a dentist prescribing a DPid Code & Identification Number to be embedded into a patient’s dental prosthetic by a dental laboratory. This could be for any number of reasons: patients wanting to preserve and ensure their smiles, dentists complying with states' denture identification legal requirements, or dental laboratories working toward increasing productivity and verifying quality and source of products. Regardless of the reason, using DPid establishes an open-line of communication between the dentist, dental laboratory, and patient increasing turnaround time and reducing costs.
“Today’s industry buzz word is transparency… simply the ability for the patient to know exactly where their prosthesis was manufactured and the material contained in it. DPid provides a single source for track and trace of any dental prosthetic for patients, dentists, and laboratory technicians.”

When opting to participate, each DPid patient receives an Information Packet that includes a unique DPid Code & Identification Number, Identification Card, and temporary password. The DPid Code & Identification Number are individually assigned to each patient and are identical on both the embedded code in the dental device and the identification card. Once the patient’s data is entered into the system, accessing that data can be accomplished by scanning the DPid Code using a smart phone or electronic tablet equipped with a 2D Code Reader Application (or "App") or by logging in to the DPid web site and entering the patient’s identification number and password.
What Does DPid Provide?
DPid offers two secure levels, Tier 1 and optional Tier 2.
Tier 1 data is typically entered by the dental laboratory per the dentist's prescription. Tier 1 will include:
- Patient’s first, middle, & last names
- Dental device’s manufacturing component and materials list
- Government and industry support documentation
- Dental Practice and Dental Laboratory contact information
This information can be extremely valuable when identifying, repairing, or remanufacturing a dental device. This is especially true if the dentist and/or dental laboratory are unfamiliar with the patient or with the dental device’s specific type, components, or materials.
Optional Tier 2 information is typically entered by the patient or a trusted representative.
Depending on the patient’s needs, Tier 2 may include:
- Date of birth
- Patient contact information
- Emergency contact information
Most importantly, Tier 2 may also include:
- Pertinent Health Information that can directly affect the manufacturing materials or dental procedure for inserting the patient’s prosthetic.
