BoomCloud does one job, running an in-house membership plan, and it is priced openly. It builds the plans, signs patients up online, bills them automatically, tracks what each member has used and shows the revenue the plan brings in. There is no contract and no setup fee.

Whether it pays depends on your patients, not the software. The per-member fee grows with success, and the integrations most practices want are on the Pro plan. Model the cost at the membership you expect in year two, not at launch.

What BoomCloud is

BoomCloud is membership plan software for dental practices, on the market since 2013. A practice designs one or more plans, for example two cleanings, exams and X-rays a year plus a discount on treatment, and sells them to patients without insurance. BoomCloud handles online sign-up, the membership agreement, recurring billing, renewals and tracking of the benefits each member has used.

The Pro plan adds payment plans, a dedicated success representative, integrations with Dentrix, Eaglesoft and Open Dental, and a listing on BoomCloud's Patient Marketplace, where patients can find practices that offer memberships.

Both paid plans have no setup fee, a 30-day free trial and can be cancelled at any time. Payment processing fees are not listed.

What it costs at different sizes

Our arithmetic from the published rates, one location, before payment processing. Pro becomes the cheaper plan above 200 members. Compare the total with the membership fees those members pay you: at 100 members paying, say, $30 a month, the software takes about a fifth to a quarter of plan revenue before treatment revenue is counted.

Where BoomCloud is strong

• Transparent terms. Prices, trial and cancellation are all public.
• Automation. Recurring billing, failed-payment handling and renewals run without front-desk work.
• Reporting. Revenue and opportunity reports show what the plan earns and which members have unused benefits.
• Patient acquisition. The Patient Marketplace can bring new members, something plain billing tools do not attempt.
• Groups. Central plan templates and reporting for multi-location practices.

Where it falls short

• Cost grows with success. The per-member fee is charged on every active member, every month.
• Integrations cost more. Without the Pro plan, membership data does not flow into your practice management system.
• Processing costs unclear. Card and bank fees for member payments are not on the pricing page.
• Little independent feedback. We found no large body of user reviews on the main review sites, so support quality is hard to judge from outside.
• Marketing is on you. The software administers the plan; patients join because the team offers it.
