- A new iTero Lumina costs about $39,000–$54,000. Align Technology publishes no list price. One dealer lists the standard model at $39,000 on sale against $50,000 regular; an authorized reseller puts new units at $46,000–$50,000.
- Lumina Pro costs more. The version with NIRI caries detection was quoted at up to about $54,000.
- The service plan is the second price. After the bundled one to three years, quotes put it at $300–$500 a month. Over five years a Lumina costs roughly $46,200–$78,000.
- Other scanners publish their prices. Among the 13 we track with a documented price, the median is $20,999, and the TRIOS 5 is listed at $25,900 with no mandatory subscription.
“iTero Lumina price” is the most searched question about any intraoral scanner, because Align Technology does not answer it. There is no list price on itero.com. This guide sets out what buyers were actually quoted, what the service plan adds, and how that compares with the 13 scanners whose price we could document.

How much does the iTero Lumina cost?
A new iTero Lumina costs about $39,000–$54,000, depending on configuration and the deal. Three points of evidence:
- A dealer listing. Voxel Dental lists the standard Lumina on a mobile cart, without NIRI, at $39,000, marked down from $50,000. When we read the page on September 30, 2026 the unit was on backorder.
- An authorized reseller. Renew Digital, which sells certified pre-owned iTero systems, states that a new Lumina costs $46,000–$50,000.
- Collected quotes. Dealer and Align quotes gathered for our research in September 2026 fall in the same band, with Lumina Pro reaching about $54,000.
Treat $50,000 as the working list price of a standard Lumina and anything near $39,000 as a good promotional price. If your quote is above $54,000, ask what extra hardware or service years it includes.

Lumina or Lumina Pro
Lumina Pro adds NIRI, near infra-red imaging. The FDA cleared it in August 2024 as an aid for detecting interproximal caries above the gingiva and monitoring their progress. The scanning hardware is otherwise the same. Pay for Pro if hygienists and dentists will use NIRI at recall exams; skip it if the scanner is for aligner records and impressions.
Trade-in and wand upgrade
Align takes older iTero Element 2 and 5D units in part exchange; quotes show up to about $20,000 off. According to Align, owners of an iTero Element Plus Series system can instead upgrade by exchanging the wand and keeping the cart or mobile unit. If you own a Plus Series scanner, ask for the wand-exchange price before a full replacement quote.
Refurbished and used
A refurbished or privately sold unit is far cheaper, and the risk is the licence. Align charges a transfer fee, quoted at $350, and the scanner needs an active service plan in the new owner's name. Get written confirmation from Align for the serial number before money changes hands.

The service plan: the price after the price
An iTero scanner is sold with a service plan. One to three years are usually included in the purchase. After that the plan is billed monthly; quotes put it at $300–$500 a month, or $3,600–$6,000 a year, depending on tier.
The plan covers software updates, cloud storage of scans, support and replacement, and the simulation tools. In our database: Cloud storage, software updates and simulators. Align does not publish the plan prices or a precise list of what is disabled if you stop paying, so ask for both.

The purchase price understates the difference between brands. Over five years:

Low end for Lumina: lowest purchase price, three service years included, $300 a month for the remaining two. High end: Lumina Pro, one year included, $500 a month for four. Computers, carts, tips and sleeves are excluded for every scanner.
Even at its lowest, a Lumina costs more over five years than a TRIOS 5 with full support ($37,212). That premium buys the direct Invisalign workflow and Align's simulation tools. Whether it is worth paying depends almost entirely on how many aligner cases you start.
How to get a quote you can compare
- Ask for an itemized quote: scanner, cart or mobile unit, computer, NIRI, training, shipping.
- Get the service plan in writing: years included, monthly price afterwards, what it covers.
- Ask about trade-in or wand exchange if you own any iTero Element.
- Ask whether the price depends on an Invisalign commitment and what happens if you miss it.
- Check the calendar. Promotions cluster around trade shows and quarter ends; the $39,000 dealer listing is a sale price.
- Get a second quote for a scanner with a published price, so you have a real alternative on the table.

Subscriptions and lock-in
4 scanners in our database require an ongoing plan; 9 are documented as working without one; the rest are unverified. Open file export in STL, PLY or OBJ is confirmed for 19 of 21.
Two questions decide how free you are after the purchase:
- Does the scanner work without a paid plan? If not, the vendor sets your running cost every year you own it.
- Can you export open files? If so, you can send scans to any lab, any aligner company and any design software. iTero Lumina does export STL and PLY, so the lock-in there is the service plan, not the file format.

What an intraoral scan is billed as: the CDT code
Practices and patients often ask what code an intraoral scan goes under. Since 2023 the CDT code set has had D0801 for a direct 3D dental surface scan (the mouth scanned with an intraoral scanner) and D0802 for an indirect scan (a scan of an impression or model). D0803 and D0804 cover the same direct and indirect pair for 3D facial surface scans. The codes describe the procedure, not the scanner, so an iTero, TRIOS, Medit or Primescan scan is coded the same way.
Whether a plan pays is a separate question. Several payers do not cover these codes: UnitedHealthcare’s 2023 code update lists D0801 through D0803 as not covered under its standard plans. Check each payer, and do not assume a scan that is part of an aligner or crown workflow is billable on its own.
