iTero Lumina

iTero Lumina is the scanner to buy if Invisalign is a large part of your practice, and an expensive choice if it is not. The redesigned wand is much smaller and lighter than its predecessor, captures a wider area at once, and sends cases straight into Align's treatment planning.

The cost is the issue. There is no list price, new units are quoted in the tens of thousands of dollars, and after the bundled years you keep paying a monthly service plan. Compare the five-year total with subscription-free scanners before you sign.

What iTero Lumina is

iTero Lumina is an intraoral scanner from Align Technology, announced on January 31, 2024. It replaces the confocal imaging of earlier iTero models with what Align calls Multi-Direct Capture: six cameras recording from several angles at once, at distances of up to 25 mm.

It is sold in cart and mobile configurations, with a PC configuration also listed. Two versions exist: Lumina and Lumina Pro, which adds NIRI for caries detection.

What Align claims, and what is independently confirmed

The only item with outside confirmation is the FDA clearance of the NIRI function. We have no independent accuracy study on file for Lumina, so treat the comparative accuracy figures as marketing until one is published.

Price and cost of ownership

Align does not publish a list price. The figures below come from dealer and Align quotes collected for our price research in September 2026. One is public: the dealer Voxel Dental lists the standard Lumina in a mobile-cart configuration without NIRI at $39,000 on sale, against a regular price of $50,000. Use the rest as a guide to what others were quoted.

• New iTero Lumina: about $39,000 to $50,000; Lumina Pro up to about $54,000.
• Trade-in of an iTero Element 2 or 5D: up to about $20,000 off.
• Refurbished units: about $9,000 to $16,000.
• Service plan after the bundled one to three years: about $300 to $500 a month.

That service plan is the number to focus on. At $300 to $500 a month it adds $3,600 to $6,000 a year for as long as you use the scanner. Where Lumina is strong

• Invisalign workflow. Scans go directly into Align's planning, and Align says the photorealistic scans replace intraoral photos for case submission.
• Ergonomics. A much smaller wand is easier in the posterior and for smaller mouths.
• Patient communication. Visualization and simulation tools are part of the appeal, along with the built-in intraoral camera.
• Open export. STL and PLY files for labs and other software.

Where it falls short

• Opaque, high pricing.
• Ongoing subscription. Cloud storage, updates and simulators depend on it.
• Ecosystem pull. The economics make most sense inside Align's world; outside it you are paying for features you may not use.
• Evidence. Performance claims are the vendor's.

Questions for your Align representative

1. What is the price of the scanner, cart or mobile unit and computer, itemized?
2. How many years of service are included, and what is the monthly price afterwards, in writing?
3. What stops working if I do not renew?
4. What is my Element worth as a trade-in, or can I exchange the wand?
5. Is the price tied to an Invisalign case commitment?

Alternatives to compare

Bottom line

For an Invisalign-heavy practice, Lumina is the most direct route from scan to treatment plan and a real ergonomic step forward. For everyone else, the subscription makes it hard to justify against scanners that cost less to buy and nothing to keep running.
