Primescan 2

Primescan 2 changes where the scanner's computer lives: in the cloud. There is no cart PC; the wireless wand sends data to DS Core and you watch the scan in a browser on any device. For a CEREC practice this simplifies hardware and moves scans straight into Dentsply Sirona's platform.

The cost of that design is dependence. It needs a paid subscription and a fast connection every time you scan, and it is one of the heaviest wands on the market.

What Primescan 2 is

Dentsply Sirona introduced Primescan 2 in September 2024 as the first cloud-native intraoral scanner. The wireless wand has exchangeable batteries and a cradle; an optional mobile cart with a display is available. Scans are captured directly on DS Core, Dentsply Sirona's cloud platform, and can be viewed and processed on any computer, laptop or tablet with internet access. Data can be exported in open formats and sent to CEREC for chairside design.

Dentsply Sirona says a full-arch scan takes under a minute. The scanner also offers fluorescence and near-infrared 2D imaging, but caries detection is not available in the United States or Japan.

Price and cost of ownership

Our arithmetic: over five years, with the cheapest DS Core plan and DS Core Care after the first year, Primescan 2 costs about $34,600. Without Care it is about $26,200. Where Primescan 2 is strong

• No PC to buy or maintain. Any device with a browser becomes the scanning screen.
• Portability. A wireless wand moves between operatories without a cart.
• Ecosystem. Direct path to CEREC and Dentsply Sirona's other DS Core applications.
• Speed. Full-arch in under a minute, per the maker.
• Open export in STL and PLY.

Where it falls short

• Always online. If the internet drops, scanning stops. Reviewers note that lag can be frustrating.
• Subscription. DS Core is mandatory for the scanner to work.
• Weight. 542 g, nearly twice TRIOS 6 and more than three times Medit i900.
• US feature gap. The caries-detection imaging is not available in the United States.
• Data location. All scans live in Dentsply Sirona's cloud; check export and retention terms.

Bottom line

Primescan 2 makes most sense in a CEREC practice with excellent internet that wants to stop maintaining scanning PCs. Test it on your own network at the busiest time of day, price DS Core for the storage you will need, and ask what access to your scans you keep if you ever cancel.
