TRIOS 6

TRIOS 6 is TRIOS 5 with a diagnostic layer. The wand, weight and openness are much the same; what is new is hyperspectral capture and Dx Plus, an AI-assisted tool that highlights surface caries, plaque, wear and recession and tracks them over time.

For about $2,000 more than TRIOS 5 on list price, it suits practices that will use scans at recall exams and for patient conversations. If the scanner is only for impressions, TRIOS 5 is the better buy.

What TRIOS 6 is

3Shape launched TRIOS 6 on March 25, 2025. It is a wireless intraoral scanner weighing 308 g, 26.6 cm long, calibration-free, with a 15 m wireless range. It captures 2,400 images a second using three light sources, white, blue fluorescence and near-infrared, which 3Shape calls hyperspectral imaging, and claims up to 110% higher scan resolution than earlier TRIOS models.

The companion software, TRIOS Dx Plus, is AI-assistive: it helps detect surface caries, plaque, tooth wear and gingival recession, and lets the practice monitor them across visits. Patients can follow their results in the new DentalHealth app. 3Shape notes that proximal caries visualization is not AI-detected, and that availability depends on country.

Price and cost of ownership

Prices read on September 30, 2026, excluding tax and shipping. Over five years a TRIOS 6 costs $27,900 without a service plan after year one, or about $38,400 with TRIOS Care throughout, if the TRIOS 5 service price applies. Compare all scanners in the intraoral scanner price guide.

Where TRIOS 6 is strong

• Diagnostics in the scan. Fluorescence and near-infrared data from the same pass as the impression.
• Monitoring. Dx Plus tracks conditions over time, useful for recall exams and patient conversations.
• Openness. PLY, DCM and STL export, no tie to one lab or aligner company.
• Ergonomics. Wireless and light, with an autoclavable tip.
• Transparent price. Listed publicly with a monthly figure.

Where it falls short

• Premium over TRIOS 5 for features some practices will not use.
• Regulatory detail. 3Shape's launch material does not state the FDA status of each Dx Plus finding; ask what is cleared in the United States.
• Proximal caries. Visualized, not AI-detected, according to 3Shape.
• Evidence. Resolution and accuracy figures are 3Shape's own.
