Open API

A documented, publicly available interface that lets other software read and write a product’s data.

An open API is the difference between a system you can build around and one you are locked into. In practice management it decides which texting, AI and analytics tools can connect — and how easily you can leave.

From our data: Only 24 of 513 products document an open API.

Open, partner and closed

An open API is documented publicly and available to any developer who accepts the terms. A partner API exists but is granted only to approved vendors, often for a fee. A closed system offers no programmatic access, so integrations depend on database bridges or screen automation that break with updates.

What to check

Whether the API can write as well as read, whether there is a per-location fee for each connected tool, rate limits, and whether you as the customer can obtain your own API key. Open Dental, for example, publishes four API tiers from free read-only access to $35 per location per month.

FAQ

Does an open API mean the software is open source?

No. An open API exposes data and functions to other programs; the source code of the product stays private.
