Dentrix Enterprise

Dentrix Enterprise is the established choice where dental has to live alongside medical: community health centers, tribal and public health programs, and large groups that want their own central database. Its strengths are the shared record across sites and the interface to medical record systems.

It is not a modern cloud product. Reviewers rate ease of use lower than any other sub-score and mention slow performance. A private group with no medical integration requirement should compare it carefully with cloud systems built for DSOs.

What Dentrix Enterprise is

Dentrix Enterprise is practice management software from Henry Schein One for multi-site dental organizations and community health centers. Unlike standard Dentrix, where each office has its own database, every location works from one central SQL database.

Henry Schein describes three reasons to choose it: central control of the organization's data, interoperability with medical software, and a product certified under the 2014 EHR Incentive Program. It has been used for many years in Indian Health Service, tribal and urban dental programs, where it is connected to the federal health record system.

Where Dentrix Enterprise is strong

• One database. A patient can be seen at any site, staff can work at any site with the right permissions, and templates and reports are shared.
• Medical interoperability. Henry Schein states the HL7 interface works with more than 40 medical software providers. For a health center with a medical record system, this is often the deciding requirement.
• Public health fit. A long installed base in community health and Indian Health Service programs means the vendor knows these workflows.
• API. Documentation for the Dentrix Enterprise API is public, which helps organizations with their own reporting or data warehouse.
• Multi-site management. Central scheduling and reporting are the features reviewers praise most.

Where it falls short

• Ease of use. 3.8 out of 5 on Capterra. New staff need substantial training.
• Speed. Several reviewers report slow performance, which with a central server often depends on hosting and network quality.
• Reporting effort. Reports are valued, but running them takes many steps, and some users question the accuracy of particular reports.
• Patient communication. Reminders and confirmations are described as unreliable; some organizations add a third-party tool.
