Best dental practice management software in 2026, chosen by data

Dental software compared on verified features, integrations, pricing and user ratings: data-backed picks, a full comparison table, cloud vs server and how to choose.

By the Denture-ID Research Desk · updated Sep 30, 2026 · figures pulled live from our database at build time

Key takeaways
  • There is no single best system. On verified data the leaders are CareStack (8.3), Dentrix Ascend (8.1), and Open Dental (8.1), but the right choice depends on deployment, practice size and the tools you already use.
  • Open Dental, Dentrix and Eaglesoft have by far the largest ecosystems: 69, 60 and 59 third-party products in our database integrate with them.
  • 71% of the 45 systems we track are available in the cloud. Only 15 publish a price; the median entry price is $395 a month.
  • Decide three things before any demo: cloud or server, which imaging and patient-communication tools must connect, and how you get your data out if you leave.

Most “best dental software” lists are ranked by who pays for placement. This one is built differently: we track 45 practice management systems, record only facts we can link to a source, and let the data choose. You will find the systems that lead on verified evidence, a comparison table of the 24 strongest, and a way to narrow them down to the two or three worth a demo.

Our picks by data

Each pick below wins a specific, stated rule. No product appears twice, so when one system would win several slots the next-best candidate takes the later one.

Cloud vs server: decide this first

This one decision removes half the market from your shortlist, so make it before you look at features.

CloudServer (on-premise)
HardwareNone beyond workstations and a reliable connection.A server in the office, replaced every few years, plus backup.
Updates and backupsHandled by the vendor. You or your IT provider install updates and verify backups.
Internet outageYou cannot work unless the vendor offers an offline mode. Keep a cellular failover. The office keeps running on the local network.
Multiple locationsOne database, reports across locations out of the box.Needs VPN, remote desktop or database replication.
Third-party toolsThrough the vendor’s API or marketplace; choice can be narrower.Widest choice. The three most-integrated systems we track all began as server products.
Security and HIPAAVendor secures the infrastructure; you still need a signed BAA and access controls.Physical and network security of the server are your responsibility.
Cost shapeHigher monthly fee, few surprises.Lower software fee, plus hardware and IT you pay for separately.

In our database 24 systems are cloud-only, 12 are server-only and 8 offer both. See the full rankings: cloud dental practice management software and server-based systems.

Best dental software by practice type

New practice or start-up

Cash flow matters most in year one. Favor systems with no server to buy and a published start-up offer. Check what the price becomes when the offer ends, and whether claims and eligibility checks are included, because a new practice has no clearinghouse contract yet.

Established single-location practice

You have years of data and staff habits. The cost of switching is mostly conversion and retraining, not the subscription, so give weight to conversion support and to whether your imaging software and sensors keep working. If you are happy with server software, the large ecosystems of Open Dental, Dentrix and Eaglesoft are hard to beat. If you want to retire the server, start from the cloud ranking.

Multi-location group or DSO

Centralized scheduling, consolidated reporting, role-based permissions and an API are the requirements. 35 systems confirm multi-location support, and the vendors that explicitly target groups and DSOs include Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental, Dentrix, Denticon, Ortho2 Edge Cloud. Ask each for a reference customer at your location count.

Specialty practice

General systems handle specialty workflows poorly. Orthodontists need contract billing and treatment milestones; oral surgeons need anesthesia records and medical cross-coding; endodontists and periodontists need referral management.

Integration ecosystem: the feature nobody demos

Your PMS decides which AI receptionist, texting platform, analytics dashboard and insurance verification tool you can use. This chart counts how many products in our database list each system as supported.

60

The top three are supported by two to three times as many tools as the fourth. If a system is far down this list, confirm in writing that the specific add-ons you rely on connect to it, and whether they write back to the schedule and ledger or only read from them.

Check any combination in the compatibility finder.

What users say

What it costs

15 of 45 systems publish a price. Entry prices run from $125 to $899 a month (median $395). The best-known names — Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Curve Dental — are quote-only. Subscription is only part of the bill: conversion, add-on bundles, eRx and, for server systems, hardware and IT add up.

We break down every published price, the hidden costs and a three-year example in the dental software cost guide.

Five mistakes to avoid

  1. Choosing on the demo. Every system schedules and charts. Differences show up in claims, eligibility, reporting and integrations, which demos skip.
  2. Ignoring imaging. Confirm your sensors, pano and CBCT software bridge to the new system and that old images stay attached to charts. Only 80% of systems with documented features confirm an imaging bridge.
  3. Assuming insurance automation is included. Real-time eligibility is confirmed for 42% and ERA auto-posting for 29%. Ask whether they cost extra.
  4. Not asking about exit. Few vendors document data export on termination. Get the format, cost and timeline in the contract.
  5. Underestimating the switch. Plan conversion, a test run and staff training before the go-live date. Our switching guide has the checklist.

How to choose in six steps

  1. Pick deployment. Cloud, server or either. This sets your shortlist.
  2. List what must connect. Imaging, patient communication, payments, AI tools. Check each in the compatibility finder.
  3. Write your requirements. Use the PMS requirements checklist so every vendor answers the same questions.
  4. Shortlist three. The software matcher filters by size, specialty, deployment and budget.
  5. Get comparable quotes. Same scenario, line items, 36-month total. See how to read a quote.
  6. Call references and sign carefully. Ask for a practice of your size that converted from your current system, and get data export terms in writing.

FAQ

What is the best dental practice management software?

On our Data Index, which scores only verified facts, the top general systems are CareStack (8.3), Dentrix Ascend (8.1), Open Dental (8.1), Curve Dental (7.6), and Dentrix (7.4). For most established single-location practices the practical shortlist is the systems with the largest ecosystems (Open Dental, Dentrix, and Eaglesoft) plus one or two cloud-native options such as CareStack and Dentrix Ascend.

What is the most popular dental software?

No vendor publishes audited market-share figures, so we use a proxy: how many other products integrate with each system. By that measure the most widely supported are Open Dental (69), Dentrix (60), Eaglesoft (59), and Denticon (28). Vendors build integrations where the customers are, so this tracks installed base closely.

What is dental practice management software?

Dental practice management software (PMS) is the system of record for a dental office. It holds the schedule, patient records, clinical and periodontal charts, treatment plans, insurance claims, billing and reporting, and it connects to imaging, patient communication and payment tools.

Is cloud-based dental software better than server-based?

Neither is better for everyone. Cloud systems remove the server, handle backups and updates, and make multi-location reporting simple. Server systems work without an internet connection, tend to have the deepest third-party ecosystems and can cost less per month. 24 of the 45 systems we track are cloud-only.

How much does dental practice management software cost?

Among 15 systems with a published price, entry prices run from $125 to $899 per month with a median of $395. Dentrix, Eaglesoft and Curve Dental are quote-only. See our dental software cost guide for every published price.

What is the best dental software for a small practice?

Small practices usually weigh price and ease of use most heavily. The best-rated general systems with at least 50 public reviews are Practice-Web (4.9/5), CareStack (4.8/5), and ABELDent (4.6/5), and the lowest published entry prices are tab32 ($125/mo per location), Practice-Web ($179/mo per location), and Open Dental ($199/mo per location).

Which dental software is best for multi-location practices and DSOs?

Look for centralized scheduling, consolidated reporting and role-based permissions across locations. 35 systems in our database confirm multi-location support; those built specifically for groups include Dentrix Ascend, Open Dental, Dentrix, and Denticon.

Method & sources

Picks on this page are selected by rule from our database of 45 practice management systems, not by opinion or sponsorship: each slot names the rule used. We have not hands-on tested these products; where a claim depends on a vendor statement we say so. User ratings are public G2 and Capterra scores collected on the date shown in each product profile.

Product facts come from the Denture-ID database, where every field links to the vendor page or document it was taken from — open any product profile to see them. Rankings use the Data Index; vendors cannot pay to change a position. Found an error? Tell us.
