Dentrix Ascend

Dentrix Ascend is the obvious cloud option for a practice already in the Henry Schein One world, and a reasonable one for growing groups. It runs in a browser, shares one database across locations and is where the vendor is putting its newest AI features.

It is not simply Dentrix in the cloud. It is a different product, and users rate it lower than the leading cloud competitors, mostly for features they had on a server system and miss here. Pricing is not published. Compare it with Curve Dental and CareStack before you decide, and test your imaging hardware.

What Dentrix Ascend is

Dentrix Ascend is a cloud-based practice management system from Henry Schein One, released in 2014. It covers scheduling, charting and perio charting, treatment planning, insurance eligibility, claims and payment posting, imaging, patient communication and analytics dashboards, all through a web browser.

The vendor says more than 80,000 clinicians, office managers and staff use it. Because every location works in the same database, a patient seen at two offices has one record, and reports can be run across the group without VPNs or replication.

Pricing: quote-only

We checked the vendor's site on September 30, 2026 and found no prices. Dentrix Ascend is sold as a per-location subscription, with conversion and onboarding quoted separately. Figures on third-party websites are estimates and we do not repeat them.

There is no server to buy, so compare the quote with the full cost of a server system including hardware and IT. Ask what is included: imaging and storage, patient communication, eligibility checks, AI features, data conversion and training. Where Dentrix Ascend is strong

• Multi-location by design. One database, central scheduling and consolidated reporting without extra infrastructure.
• Feature coverage. We confirmed charting, voice perio, treatment planning, real-time eligibility, electronic claims, ERA auto-posting, e-prescribing, an imaging bridge and custom reporting in vendor documentation.
• AI roadmap. The vendor lists AI for radiograph review and retake flagging, AI clinical documentation, revenue cycle automation and an assistant for plain-language queries. Ask which are included in your plan and which are add-ons.
• Ecosystem for a cloud system. The vendor runs an API exchange, and 23 products in our database list Dentrix Ascend as supported. That is fewer than server-based Dentrix but comparable to other cloud leaders.
• Vendor stability. Henry Schein One is not going to disappear, which matters for a system holding your records.

Where it falls short

• Feature gaps noticed by switchers. Reviewers mention limited medical history forms, lab case management and referral tracking, and restrictions when editing procedure codes and insurance payment tables.
• Performance. Some users report freezing and slow response, particularly with imaging.
• User rating. At 4.1 out of 5 on Capterra it trails Curve Dental (4.4), and in our database CareStack and Denticon are rated higher as well.
• Price opacity. As with Dentrix, you cannot budget without a sales call.
• Internet dependence. Plan a backup connection.

Moving from Dentrix to Dentrix Ascend

This is the most common route, and the point most often misunderstood. The two products do not share a database. Your data is converted, staff learn new screens, and some add-ons you use with Dentrix may not connect to Ascend. Treat it like any other switch: get the conversion specification in writing, run a test conversion and check sample patients. Our switching guide has the checklist.

The benefit of staying with the vendor is continuity of account, claims and payment services, not a shortcut on the migration itself.

Dentrix Ascend scores near the top of cloud systems on our Data Index for features, integrations and vendor stability, and loses ground on pricing clarity and user rating. It is a sound choice for a Henry Schein One customer or a multi-location group. A single office with no tie to the vendor should get at least two competing quotes.
