- Of 45 practice management systems we track, only 15 publish a price. The median published entry price is $395 per month; the range runs from $125 to $899.
- Dentrix, Dentrix Ascend, Eaglesoft and Curve Dental do not publish prices. Every figure you see for them online is a third-party estimate. Below we explain how their bills are built and how to get a comparable quote.
- Open Dental is the most transparent major system: $199 per location per month for the first year, then $149, with every add-on on a public fee sheet.
- The subscription is rarely the whole bill. Data conversion ($1,195–$1,450 where published), e-services, eRx per prescriber and, for on-premise systems, a server can double the first-year cost.
Dental software pricing is hard to compare because the biggest vendors do not publish it, and the ones that do use different units: per location, per provider, per user or per concurrent session. This guide puts every price we could verify on one page, explains what the quote-only vendors charge for, and shows what a practice really pays over three years.
The short answer
Budget roughly $125–$395 a month for an entry-level or self-hosted system and $395–$899 a month for an all-in-one cloud platform that bundles claims, eligibility and patient communication. Then add one-time conversion and training and, for server software, the hardware and IT support the vendor does not sell you.

Dentrix and Dentrix Ascend pricing
Neither product has a public price. Henry Schein One sells Dentrix (installed on a server in your office) and Dentrix Ascend (cloud) through its own sales team, and review directories list both as “contact vendor”. Sites that quote a precise monthly figure for Dentrix are estimating. None of the ones we checked cites a Henry Schein price list, and their numbers disagree with each other by a factor of three.
What we can say with confidence is how the bill is built:
- Dentrix (server) is a subscription that bundles the software with support and updates. Optional bundles add eClaims, eligibility, payments and patient communication. You also pay for the server, workstations, backups and whoever maintains them.
- Dentrix Ascend (cloud) is priced per location. Conversion of your existing data and any imaging migration are quoted separately. There is no server to buy.
- Both are commonly discounted for multi-year terms and multi-location groups, so treat the first quote as a starting point.
If you need a number before the sales call: cloud systems that do publish prices start between $125 and $899 a month per location. A Dentrix Ascend quote far outside that band deserves a question.
Eaglesoft pricing
Eaglesoft is sold by Patterson Dental and is also quote-only; directories show “pricing available upon request”. It is server-based software sold together with a Patterson support plan, and it is usually bought by practices that already use Patterson for supplies and equipment, which affects the deal on offer.
Ask Patterson to separate four things on the quote: the software subscription, the support plan, imaging (Eaglesoft’s own imaging module versus a bridge to the imaging software you already own) and data conversion. If you are moving away from Eaglesoft, note that Open Dental lists it among the systems it converts from for a published fee.
Open Dental pricing
Open Dental publishes its entire fee schedule, which makes it the reference point for every other quote:

Open Dental also offers a 90-day money-back guarantee. The trade-off for the low price is that the standard version is self-hosted: the server, backups, security and HIPAA safeguards are your responsibility or your IT provider’s.
Curve Dental, Denticon, CareStack and Archy
- Curve Dental: quote-only. Its pricing page contains no figures.
- Denticon: Planet DDS states that Denticon “starts at $795 per month”, with packages and add-ons customized by practice size. It is built for groups and DSOs, so expect the per-location price to fall with volume.
- CareStack: two published plans. Essentials starts at $829 a month and Intelligence (adding AI notes, voice perio and AI X-ray analysis) at $1,299. CareStack says an implementation fee may apply depending on migration complexity.
- Archy: one flat platform price of $899 per location per month with unlimited users, providers, claims, eligibility checks and texting. New practices pay $400 until they reach 400 patients or one year.
The pattern: all-in-one cloud platforms cost more per month than self-hosted software, but the price includes things you would otherwise buy separately, such as clearinghouse fees, eligibility checks, texting and the server itself.

The gap between the cheapest and most expensive line is large, but the rows are not like for like. The all-in-one prices include claims, eligibility checks and texting; the bare Open Dental figure does not include a server or the add-ons most practices end up buying. “Cheap” only helps if the system does the job. Before choosing on price, check three things that are expensive to fix later: whether it bridges to your imaging software, whether real-time eligibility and ERA posting are included, and how you get your data out if you leave. How to read a dental software quote
For quote-only vendors, send the same request to each one so the answers are comparable:
- Fix the scenario. State locations, dentists, hygienists, workstations and current software. Ask every vendor to quote that exact scenario.
- Ask for a line-item quote. Software, support, each add-on bundle, conversion, imaging migration, training and hardware on separate lines.
- Ask for the 36-month total. Include the end of any first-year discount and the price-increase clause in the contract.
- Ask what is not included. Clearinghouse fees, eligibility checks, text messages, eRx and payment processing rates.
- Ask about leaving. Contract length, auto-renewal, notice period, and the cost and format of a full data export.

Is there free dental software?
We have not verified a fully free, supported practice management system for US practices. Some vendors run time-limited offers for start-ups: Oryx advertises $0 per month until a new practice reaches 200 patients or 12 months, and Archy a reduced rate until 400 patients or one year.
